Anyone who has ever served in the military remembers their first encounter with the drill instructor, because within this instrument of military training exists a leadership speaker and motivational speaker rolled into one. The concept of getting an otherwise apathetic individual or someone with a short attention span to listen and act is much easier said than done. However, once a basic trainee observes the technique employed by their instructor or “speaker” they are likely to remember, absorb, and yes, respond to the mentor in a way that is truly effective and remarkable. So, what is it that separates the mediocre instructor from the pro? One could combine a number of qualities into a convenient word: “Charisma”. That may sound rather theatrical in describing a drill instructor, but yelling, threats and screaming aside, the manner by which an effective speaker holds the audience is best put into subcategories that include humor, verbal and visual persuasion, along with demonstrations designed to draw the interest of the formerly “neutral” audience. A good speaker will use examples that can easily be visualized in the mind of the audience or supported with actual visuals or demonstrations which leave little to the imagination.

Let us refer for the moment to the motivational speaker who motivates using “infotainment” – making the subject matter that much more interesting. The most important element in this aspect of infotainment is the novelty added to fact so that a future correlation can be constructed in the mind of the observer. In example, a speaker from the American Cancer Society illustrated cancer deaths caused by cigarette smoking as “It’s like two Boeing 747 Jetliners carrying 300 people each, colliding in midair and killing every person aboard, every hour, 24 hours a day every day all year.” This style of presentation amounts to a dramatic translation of otherwise stating that smoking is responsible for “X” number of deaths every year. It is a shocking illustration, and much more effective and certainly more memorable than a boring statistic. If the speaker has the kind of verbal style and body language that is capable of capturing the crowd, we conclude that this speaker has the elements necessary to project “charisma” and thereby hold an audience.

It is an astonishing fact – repeatedly shown in numerous surveys – that two-thirds of the workforce are not engaged in their work. Imagine the magnitude of lost productivity and innovation this represents! It also lies at the heart of much workplace strife and it denies workers any chance of true satisfaction from their working life. It begs the question – what causes this lack of employee motivation?

No doubt the responsibility is shared – the workers may have limited vision and aspiration. They also inherit decades of conditioning which implies that work is something that has to be endured and that effort should be limited to the minimum. It’s no accident that there are many more negative terms for work than positive ones.
