Lord Nicholas Stern is a foremost authority on the effects of climate change on the economy in the world today. His most recent works include The Stern Review a review of the economics of global warming commissioned by the British Government and published in 2006. Widely acclaimed by many of his colleagues, it generated a sense of shock and horror in those less familiar with the subject as he likened the potential economic damage as greater than the combined effects of World War I, World War II and the Great Depression of 1929. In 2009 Stern published Blueprint for a Safer Planet: How to Manage Climate Change and Create a New Era of Progress and Prosperity, a must read for all seriously concerned about climate change.

With an insight into current political strategy on climate change, he provides a relevant and critical input for business in deciding how to tackle the future challenge of reducing carbon emissions by up to 80% by 2050. Although he helped formulate Labour government policy, he is currently in discussion with Conservative Party leaders on the formation of the Green Investment Bank initiative.

What’s Your Style?

Article by Motivational Speaker Gregory Scott Reid

Sometimes life throws us a curve. We think we’ve got ittogether, and we’re doing the right thing – only to find outthat we didn’t really know what the right thing was in the firstplace.Take Michael for example. As a department manager in a majorcorporation, Michael had 24 employees under his supervision. Hewas kept fairly busy supervising those employees, ensuringquotas were met, and reporting to his supervisors. Michael alsospent a fair amount of time trying to impress those supervisorsand the corporation’s upper management; you see, Michael was ona quest to climb the corporate ladder and was working hard for apromotion. When the promotional opportunity arrived, Michael was confident. His department had met their goals; he had made sure of that. He had become quite good at assigning duties and delegatingresponsibilities and following through with employees who didn’tor couldn’t fulfill those tasks. Frankly, he thought of theinterview process for the promotion as a formality – he was byfar the best candidate. The morning of the interview, Michael entered the conferenceroom in his power suit and tie, prepared to recite hisaccomplishments to his supervisors. Imagine his surprise whenhe looked around the table and not one supervisor oradministrator was present. The entire committee consisted ofemployees in his department – the very employees under hismanagement! Their roles quickly reversed as one employeeexplained that the company decided those best able to determineif a manager should be promoted were the employees he workedfor. Michael was stunned – he didn’t work for them at all -they worked for him! That is where Michael was wrong. The company believed that amanager’s role is to make it easier for employees accomplishtheir jobs, to remove any obstacles in their way, and to makesure they had the all the tools and training they needed to getthe job done. In essence, his job was to help them! Michaelwas crestfallen as he realized that he had been managing hisdepartment under an entirely different philosophy, assuming hisjob was to give orders, and his subordinates were to followthem. Michael’s management style had backfired; if he hadhelped his employees, they most certainly would have recognizedand rewarded his contributions to their team. Put yourself in Michael’s shoes. Imagine being told you lostyour job but could reapply, all you had to do was receive therecommendations of your subordinates or coworkers. Would youwant your fate resting in their hands?

The Language of Schooling

Article by Brixovng

People decide how to use language for meaning depending on the content and purpose of the communication, the relationship between speaker and listener or between speakers, the mode used for communicating and their familiarity with the resources the language has to offer. The language of schooling, according to this perspective, has its own forms and functions created for academic purposes. Register refers to specific features of language that vary according to the context and purpose of a communication. Speakers of all languages and of all dialects are assumed to engage in register variation. One linguistic feature of an academic register, used in academic writing, is “nominalization,” as in the sentence that follows from an 11th-grade history text: The destruction of the buffalo and removal of Native Americans to reservations emptied the land for grazing cattle. This type of structure packs noun phrases into sentences to condense information, and it can present challenges to readers unfamiliar with the writing style.

The academic language used to construe meaning and communicate in school, Schleppegrell argued, is made up of sets of academic linguistic registers that differ from language registers used in everyday conversation. And every academic subject has its own register. Learning academic registers is inseparable from learning school subjects, in her view, as children must master new language forms and functions for academic tasks and purposes. As explained further in Schleppegrell, these tasks include reading and writing reports, articulating arguments, formulating hypotheses, building theories and developing explanations, and using the linguistic and discourse features typical of scientific, technical, and humanities fields.
