It is an astonishing fact – repeatedly shown in numerous surveys – that two-thirds of the workforce are not engaged in their work. Imagine the magnitude of lost productivity and innovation this represents! It also lies at the heart of much workplace strife and it denies workers any chance of true satisfaction from their working life. It begs the question – what causes this lack of employee motivation?
No doubt the responsibility is shared – the workers may have limited vision and aspiration. They also inherit decades of conditioning which implies that work is something that has to be endured and that effort should be limited to the minimum. It’s no accident that there are many more negative terms for work than positive ones.

“Britain is not on its knees” states Digby, Lord Jones of Birmingham
This was one of the key messages which attendees took away from the seminar “Business Solutions for a Recession” held in Peterborough at the end of April 2009. The seminar was organised by the Learning and Skills Council in partnership with the Peterborough and Cambridgeshire agencies who are supporting local businesses during this current recession. Various local businesses attended attracted by the fact that the former Minister for Trade and Investment, Digby Jones, was to be the guest speaker along with Stewart White from the BBC who acted as host. Many of these businesses had previously seen Lord Digby Jones at the UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) awards evening held at Bury St Edmunds in 2008 where he was both motivational and inspirational. Again, he didn’t disappoint. In fact many audience members wondered why there couldn’t be more people like him in Government!
The main theme of the event was training and that, even during a recession, companies must continue to invest in their staff otherwise they may be left behind when the economy picks up again. To reinforce this, Stewart White said “your business is two and a half times more likely to survive if you have trained your staff”.

Although motivational posters and speakers can be beneficial for people to view and hear, the motivational drivethat a person has ultimately has to come from within. Different people have this motivational drive atvarious levels, with some people having little to no motivation to change their circumstances and others having ahigh motivational level to make a change in their lives. This motivational drive can be escalated through thevarious events and people that are in a person’s life, and they can also be quashed, depending on what theinfluence is and what is being pursued.

Question by Kerrianne M: Does anyone know of any inspirational speakers?
I am President of a small, non-profit charity group geared towards fundraising for local children in need. I am looking for guest speakers to speak at our monthly meetings. I have four slots to fill… each speaker need only speak once at one meeting…and the speakers need only speak for a half hour to an hour. I am looking for speakers involved with children, charities, or simply inspirational speakers, speakers who are disabled, etc… Does anyone know of any good speakers in the S. Shore (massachusetts) area I might be able to contact? Thank you so much for your help!
